Hands-on fun and interactive science discovery proved a winning combination as Questacon—The National Science and Technology Centre won the Tourist Attraction category for the seventh consecutive year at the 2011 Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards last night.

“To be recognised for our contribution to the ACT and region’s tourism industry is a great honour,” Questacon Director Professor Graham Durant said. “Questacon’s ongoing success is founded on the hard work and commitment of our staff and volunteers and the significant support from the Australian Government Department of Innovation”.

The Australian Government’s investment in Questacon as Australia’s National Science and Technology centre continues to drive interest in science and innovation - Questacon plays a key role in inspiring our youth towards careers in science and technology. Minister for Innovation Senator Kim Carr also congratulated the Questacon team on their commitment and passion and acknowledged the contribution of other key stakeholders.

“The Australian Government is pleased to congratulate Questacon on its success. We acknowledge the significant contribution of Questacon’s valued business partners, and the initial contribution of the Japanese Government in establishing this centre more than twenty years ago.

“The science experiences and initiatives that Questacon offer lead the way in ensuring a scientifically engaged Australia,” Senator Carr said.

Questacon works with a range of ACT and region tourism associations to make the most of the experiences on offer to Canberra visitors. The success of the region’s tourism industry allows Questacon to communicate science to a wide audience. Our focus on science communication provides a contrasting but complementary experience to Canberra’s many other tourist attractions.

The annual Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards encourage and celebrate excellence, quality, professionalism and innovation within the local tourism industry. Questacon has won the ACT Tourist Attraction award 12 times including the past seven years. Questacon will represent the Canberra and Capital Region at the Australian Tourism Awards in Cairns in May 2012.
