Counsellor in Europe

Dr Alex Cooke, Brussels

Australia’s relationship with Europe is deep-rooted, vast and profound. The European Union and its Member States are Australia’s largest science and innovation collaboration partner. The department’s Counsellor in Europe is based at the Australian Embassy and Mission to the European Union and NATO in Brussels. The department's Counsellor is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to strengthen Australia's engagement with industry, resources, science, and innovation systems in Europe. This includes direct linkages with the European Commission, European countries, and multilateral fora.

The Counsellor’s key roles include:

  • Supporting bilateral relationships and identifying opportunities for further collaboration with key European Member states.
  • Representing the department in its dealings with the European Commission and reporting back to inform policy development.
  • Engaging with industry and key science and research institutions to encourage collaboration through Australia’s Global Innovation Strategy, an initiative under the National Innovation and Science Agenda.
  • Supporting departmental staff or representing the department at key multilateral fora and organisations such as the OECD Committees on science, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital economy; G20 meetings on industry and digital economy; and key events of the Square Kilometre Array Organisation.
