Counsellor in India

The Australia-India relationship is of significant importance, with India being one of the most rapidly advancing economies in the world. India already makes a significant contribution to global science and their research capabilities continue to grow alonside their economy. The department strengthens this relationship through ongoing collaboration and discussions. India is a growing and important market for trade and investment in resources, as well as in areas such as clean coal and high efficiency low emissions (HELE) coal fired power stations.  India is also an important partner for science and technology cooperation. The department’s Counsellor in New Delhi represents its interests to the Indian Government.

The Counsellor’s key roles include:

  • Developing and implementing strategies to strengthen Australia's engagement with the industry, resources, innovation, science and research systems in India.
  • Supporting the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund, our largest bilateral partnership for innovation, science and research.
  • Engaging with industry and key science and research institutions to encourage collaboration through Australia’s Global Innovation Strategy, an initiative under the National Innovation and Science Agenda.
  • Promoting Australian resources and industry by supporting current and new bilateral trade and investment to advance the important and growing bilateral relationship on resources and energy commodities.
