Counsellor in Japan

Japan is Australia’s largest export destination for energy resources, and our largest Asian investor in Australian resources projects. Japan is also a key partner for Australian industry and science. The department's Counsellor in Tokyo represents the department’s interests to Japan and promotes Australian resources, industry and innovation sectors.

The Counsellor’s key roles include:

  • Supporting Australian resources and energy commodity-related businesses through assisting with market access issues for goods and services into Japan and through the provision of market information.
  • Analysis, reporting and advocacy on resources and innovation-related policy issues of importance to Australia.
  • Engaging with existing and potential future Japanese investors in Australia’s resources sector, including in LNG, coal and minerals. Promoting existing and further technology collaboration in resources sectors such as clean coal, carbon capture and storage (CCS), high efficiency low emission (HELE) coal fired power stations, and hydrogen.
  • Supporting the implementation of bilateral innovation activities in partnership with key Japanese Government agencies.
  • Engaging with industry and key science and research institutions to encourage collaboration through Australia’s Global Innovation Strategy, an initiative under the National Innovation and Science Agenda.
  • Engaging with the Japanese Government and key stakeholders in the manufacturing industry to feed into policy development and encourage further trade and investment.
