Safety, Standards and Regulations

As with all products, services and processes available on the Australian market, those which contain or involve biotechnology or nanotechnology also need to comply with Australia’s regulatory framework to ensure safety.

New technologies like biotechnology and nanotechnology could potentially raise health, safety, environmental, social and ethical issues. It is important that industry, the research community, and regulatory agencies are informed about these developments. The Health Safety and Environment Working Group facilitates effective communication across portfolios and to ensure changing regulatory needs raised by technological developments are considered.

Regulation

A range of federal and state Government agencies form part of Australia’s regulatory framework for biotechnology and nanotechnology.
