Bauxite/alumina/aluminium

  • Australia has large deposits of bauxite and is the world’s largest producer and exporter of bauxite.
  • Australia is the world’s 2nd largest exporter of alumina and 4th largest for aluminum.

Bauxite is a naturally-occurring ore from which alumina is refined and then smelted to produce aluminium.

3 stages of producing aluminium

  1. Mining - bauxite ore
  2. Refining - to recover alumina
  3. Smelting - to make aluminium

Aluminium is used in building and construction, transport, heating and ventilation, packaging, electrical and communications infrastructure. It is commonly found in various products we use daily such as cans, foil, utensils, bikes and cars.

The industry is highly-integrated from mining, refining to smelting.

In Australia, bauxite is mined in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland, while processing takes place in Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.
