Greenhouse Gas Storage Acreage Release
The Australian Government recognises the potential contribution that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) can make to lowering emissions in Australia and supports the global development of GHG capture technology and storage capacity.
Noting that GHG storage capacity is geology specific, the Australian Government is facilitating the exploration of potential offshore geological storage sites in Australia. This will ensure geological storage capacity is available to support the rapid deployment of capture technology should it become commercially viable.
In 2014, the Australian Government will release offshore GHG storage assessment acreage to enable exploration of prospective sites. It will allow GHG storage explorers to obtain the necessary exploration permits to assess potential storage formations, as supported by the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006.
Information on the release areas and closing dates for bids will be published in the Australian Government Notices Gazette.
