National Store Project 2001 (abandoned 2004)
The National Store Project was a project undertaken in 2001 the then Australian Government to establish, on Commonwealth land, a purpose-built facility for the secure storage of long-lived intermediate level radioactive waste produced by Australian Government agencies.
Following former Prime Minister Howard's announcement in July 2004 that the Australian Government was abandoning the National Repository Project, the National Store Project was also stopped as a new siting process was to begin for a combined low and intermediate level waste management facility.
The Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Act 2005 was passed by Federal Parliament to facilitate this process.
