The Office of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman

On 1 February 2016, the Minister for Small Business, the Hon Kelly O'Dwyer MP, announced the appointment of Ms Kate Carnell AO as the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman.

The creation of this Office supersedes the former Office of the Australian Small Business Commissioner.

The Office of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman

The Office of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) launched on 11 March 2016.

The role of the ASBFEO is to:

  • Advocate for small businesses and family enterprises;
  • Provide access to dispute resolution services to assist businesses to resolve disputes without resorting to costly litigation; and
  • Ensure that government policies take into account the needs of small businesses and family enterprises.

The functions and powers of the ASBFEO are set out under the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Act 2015. The legislation and associated rules are available on the Federal Register of Legislation website.
