Paul Trotman, Head of Resources Division, addressed the 2021 APPEA Conference.

This year’s Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) conference was held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, WA from 14–17 June. It is the biggest oil and gas event in the southern hemisphere.

The annual event brought together over 120 companies from the oil and gas sector, with exhibitions from:

  • industry leaders
  • innovators
  • policy makers
  • energy professionals.

The Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison opened the conference to more than 1700 delegates from across Australia and the world.

The Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia, Keith Pitt, addressed the conference by video. The Minister opened nominations for the 2021 Offshore Greenhouse Gas Storage Acreage Release. The greenhouse gas storage acreage release is the first since 2014. It has the potential to open up offshore areas for carbon capture, use and storage opportunities.

Minister Pitt also used this as an opportunity to launch the 2021 Offshore Petroleum Exploration Acreage Release. This is the first time launching the offshore petroleum acreage release at the conference since 2018.

On day 3 of the conference, Paul Trotman, Head of Resources Division, updated industry on current policy initiatives. We showcased both an exhibition booth and virtual booth at the conference. The booths connected attendees with departmental staff who work on energy and resource policy matters.

Australian Government agencies in attendance included:

  • Geoscience Australia
  • CSIRO
  • The Australian Institute of Marine Science
  • The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority
  • The National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator.

We would like to thank APPEA for hosting another great conference event.
