Offshore Decommissioning Directorate

We’re helping to build an effective offshore decommissioning industry to support Australia’s economic transition to net zero.

What we do

We’re working with industry to maximise the benefit of decommissioning oil and gas infrastructure to the Australian economy and the environment.

Growing an offshore decommissioning industry

We’re helping to carry out Australia’s Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap to:

  • grow Australia’s decommissioning industry
  • promote Australia as a place for safe, efficient and environmentally responsible decommissioning
  • address sector-wide barriers to make decommissioning more efficient
  • help industry and stakeholders interact with regulatory systems.

Note: the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) is still responsible for regulating safety and environmental approvals in Commonwealth waters.

Partnering with the decommissioning industry and other sectors

We’re working with industry, unions, state and territory governments, First Nations groups, local communities, international partners and organisations to:

  • encourage collaboration between all decommissioning stakeholders
  • improve transparency across the decommissioning pipeline
  • be a trusted partner and advisor on decommissioning policy matters
  • ensure activities complement the Australian Government’s Future Made in Australia agenda
  • ensure community confidence in regulatory frameworks that decommissioning remains an offshore industry responsibility.

We are establishing partnerships with other governments to collaborate and share knowledge on decommissioning activity.

Growing the decommissioning industry’s knowledge base

We support research and development in the industry to promote safe and efficient decommissioning.

Publications we’ve commissioned are:
