Professor Fred Watson AM is ending his tenure as Australia’s Astronomer-at-large after 6 years, moving on to a new opportunity in the university sector.

His last day working for our department will be 31 October 2024.

Throughout his service as Astronomer-at-Large, Prof Watson used his expertise as a science communicator and public advocate to inspire people’s interest in astronomy, astrophysics and science.

He also has given expert advice to our department to support Australia’s domestic astronomy capability, and to Australian delegates at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

‘It's bittersweet to be leaving the department after half a century as an astronomer in the public service,’ Prof Watson says.

‘First at the two Royal Observatories in the UK and then here in Australia at the former Australian Astronomical Observatory and in my current role.’

‘I will miss my departmental colleagues, but I am optimistic for the future of Australian astronomy.’

‘I thank my colleagues for their collaborative spirit, knowledge and experience, and for the support they have given me over the past 6 years.’

We extend our gratitude to Prof Watson for his unwavering commitment and ongoing passion for Australian astronomy.

We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
