Introduction
On 9 May 2024, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources published the Future Gas Strategy, which maps the Australian Government’s plan for how gas will support our economy’s transition to net zero in partnership with the world. This analytical report provides an evidence base to support development of the strategy.
The analytical report looks at:
- the current local and global context around Australian natural gas
- the emissions associated with Australia's gas sector
- the outlook for local and international demand for gas
- the outlook for gas supply
- the state of competition, costs and pricing in the gas market
- the possibilities for future gas supply
We use scenarios produced by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to guide our understanding of the future gas outlook.
The report is available for download as a PDF and as a Word document. We have also provided our data tables for download in spreadsheet format.

- add Table 6.3 to show network charges (multi-asset services and Victorian Transmission System charges)
- add missing in-text references
- remove text about a forecast supply gap for 2027 if Narrabri is not approved (earliest gas start is 2028)
- make minor text corrections
- update two references in the reference list.
