Sam Usher
CEO, Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA)

Sam Usher took on the role of the first CEO of the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA) in January 2022.

Sam has held a wide range of executive and non-executive director roles across nuclear businesses in both public and private sector, in the UK and internationally.

He has a deep understanding of the technical, operational, regulatory and stakeholder challenges associated with safely managing and disposing of radioactive waste, and has a record of implementing effective radioactive waste management and decommissioning programs.

His 30 years of experience in nuclear and radioactive waste management includes operational roles in intermediate-level waste retrievals and highly active liquor management, and directorial roles in waste operations, recycling and waste management programs. He has extensive experience in stakeholder policy engagement gained as programme manager for the UK Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM).

He relocated to Adelaide in July 2022 with his family, and is delighted to be able to lead ARWA in delivering safe and secure long-term management of Australia’s radioactive waste.
