Advancing Women in STEM is the Australian Government’s commitment to improving gender equity in STEM.

Australia‘s contribution to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is well known. However, gender imbalance in the sector means we are not tapping into the entire talent pool.

Launched today, Advancing Women in STEM is the Australian Government’s commitment to improving gender equity in STEM. We envision a society that provides equal opportunity for people of all genders to learn, work and engage in STEM. By building an inclusive and diverse STEM workforce, Australia can take full advantage of the jobs of the future.

This strategy is part of a long-term approach to increasing women’s participation in STEM. Through the 2019‑20 Budget, new funding of $1.8 million over 3 years will support ongoing operations of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) initiative. An additional $1.5 million over 3 years will support a digital awareness initiative. Led by the Women in STEM Ambassador, it will increase visibility of girls and women and showcase opportunities STEM study and careers can provide.

This investment builds on government programs already supporting STEM gender equity, including $4.5 million in funding through the 2018-19 Budget.
