Shane Holland has joined the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility (NRWMF) Taskforce as our Indigenous Engagement Manager.

When asked what he most wants to achieve in his new role, Shane is clear. “I want to create broad economic, social and cultural advantages. This is important for the Indigenous community of whichever site is finally chosen.”

Shane brings a wealth of experience working on behalf of Indigenous communities. His most recent role was as the first manager of Aboriginal traditional fisheries for the Department of Primary Industries and Regions, South Australia. Shane was also a member of the Indigenous Reference group of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. The group worked on funding initiatives to enhance opportunities and build capacity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This enabled them to be better represented in the seafood industry.

Shane’s interesting and varied career saw him work as a mud logger in the oil exploration industry in the Timor Sea, and in medical pathology in South Australia. He then turned to marine sciences. Working for the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, he conducted marine research in coastal waters and helped create South Australia’s marine park network.

“My biggest learning over my career has been the overall value of engaging with Indigenous communities.

“Building relationships between government and first nations people is a really important step towards primacy for Aboriginal people.”

Shane has lived and worked in South Australia for most of his life, and will be based in our Adelaide office. He looks forward to working with the community.
