Gas plays a critical role in Australia’s economy. It underpins jobs, investments and our economic growth.
The Future Gas Strategy informs our national conversation on the role of gas out to 2050 and beyond. It will guide the Australian Government’s approach to meeting our future gas supply needs while reaching our legislated net zero targets.
The strategy’s 6 principles will help governments, trade partners, investors, businesses and consumers make decisions about gas in the medium and long-term:
- Australia will reach net zero emissions by 2050.
- Gas must remain affordable for Australian users.
- Australia will need new sources of gas to meet long-term demand.
- Gas use will shift towards higher-value and non-substitutable uses.
- Gas and electricity markets must adapt to remain fit for purpose throughout the energy transformation.
- Australia will remain a reliable trading partner for gas export.
The Future Gas Strategy Analytical Report presents the data and evidence supporting the strategy. We also consulted with stakeholders, communities and the general public to inform the strategy.
The Future Gas Strategy supports the 6 decarbonisation plans that will set out pathways for Australia’s industry sectors to transition to net zero. The government is developing the sector plans under Australia’s Net Zero Plan, and will release this by the end of March 2025.
