Alice Leung in a classroom with students

The PM’s Prizes for Science recognise the critical role teachers play in encouraging and inspiring students to take an interest in, consider and pursue careers in STEM.

Nominating is your opportunity to promote teaching excellence in Australia’s primary and secondary school classrooms. Recipients of the science teaching prizes are now awarded $250,000 in prize money.

There are 2 science teaching prizes:

  • Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Primary Schools
  • Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools.

By nominating a science, technology, engineering or mathematics teacher for a science teaching prize, you are acknowledging their achievements, efforts and positive impact.

Nominating is the first step. No one can be recognised unless you nominate them.

How to nominate in 5 easy steps

You can nominate a teacher for a science teaching prize in 5 easy steps. You’ll need to provide:

  1. Your name and contact details.
  2. The name and contact details of the person you are nominating.
  3. A short description of your nominee’s achievements (approximately 600-900 words).
  4. The names and contact details of 2 supporters.
  5. Your nominee’s up to date CV (2 pages maximum).

Strong applications include specific examples showing how your nominee’s contribution to student learning meets the assessment criteria.

You may re-submit a nomination that was unsuccessful to give your nominee another chance. If you do this, make sure your nominee is still eligible and the nomination details are up to date and accurate.

Once you’ve gathered the information you need, it will take about an hour to complete the nomination form.

Who can nominate

School principals and peers can nominate. You need to personally know about your nominated teacher’s achievements and be able to offer informed opinions about the value of their work.

If you are a peer nominator, you need to include the school principal at your nominee’s current school as a ‘supporter’.

  • actively teach science, technologies, engineering or mathematics, but do not need to be a specialist in these subject areas
