Supporting the community by shopping locally in Kimba

‘The Thing About Kimba’ campaign returns to lift local spending in the region. A great initiative to support economic security in Kimba.

A Kimba shopping bag has made it all the way to Canberra!

Spending within the Kimba district leads to more employment and a more vibrant place to live.

That’s the driving philosophy behind The Thing About Kimba, an initiative urging everyone to shop local.

The campaign began through the Kimba Community Development Group when Carmen Rayner and other concerned locals held a think tank.

‘ We thought of how we can support our businesses because they give an enormous amount to our community year in, year out,’ Carmen said.

‘Feedback from the last time campaign  in 2017 showed most local consumers really do want to shop locally. We want to support the businesses that give so much to our community…but we know we can do better.’

So how does The Thing About Kimba plan to keep that money local?

By educating people on the alternatives to buying online and showing them the range available in Kimba. By challenging them to get on board to create a buzz around The Thing About Kimba.

‘If you are coming home from Adelaide or Whyalla or Port Lincoln and you need something for tea that night then stop and grab a few things. But do not do your weekly shopping out of town every week,’ Carmen urges.  ‘Buying up a fortnight’s worth of groceries is not okay. Neither is going to Cleve, Wudinna, Whyalla or wherever every week and doing the shopping,’ Carmen said.

‘That is not okay. You know it, we know it, now let’s make sure everyone else knows it too.’

The Thing About Kimba initiative has a Facebook page with about 500 followers. These include ex-Kimba residents who like to stay in touch and hear what is going on in the area.

There is another benefit to spending your money around town. You can join The Thing About Kimba loyalty program for $5 and get your card stamped when you buy over $20 at participating businesses. You will then be on the way to entering the monthly draw for a $100 voucher.

The next shopping voucher draw will be on September 7.

If you’ve got a little red bag, then be sure to upload a photo of it somewhere unusual to be in the running for the prize.

The National Radioactive Waste Management Facility (NRWMF)  congratulates the Kimba Community Development Group for bringing back this campaign.

We’ve tried to get into the spirit of the initiative, by taking our own bag out for some shopping in Canberra.

Our team won’t be entering the Facebook competition, but will continue to support Kimba’s economic security and similar campaigns.
