Today Minister Canavan released the National Resources Statement – the first long-term plan and reform agenda for the Australian resources sector in over 20 years.

The Government’s vision is to have the world’s most advanced, innovative, successful resources sector which delivers sustained prosperity and social development for all Australians.

The Government is committed to improving the sector’s performance, which has never been more important to Australia’s economic wealth and prosperity.

The Statement maps out a robust action plan to realise this vision and highlights areas where greater collaborative effort is needed.

The Statement builds on the Resources 2030 Taskforce report which made recommendations on how the sector can remain globally competitive and sustainable in the 21st century.

The Government will work with industry, state and territory governments, research organisations and the community to advance its reform agenda in a collaborative manner. Implementation of some actions is already underway in partnership with states and territories. This follows agreement to a strategic resources reform agenda at the COAG Energy Council Resources Roundtable held in December last year.
