Barndioota Consultative Committee met on 13 August to discuss the progress of the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility.
The Committee gave an update on the recent Federal Court case between the Barngarla Aboriginal Determination (BDAC) and Kimba District Council. Justice White ruled in favour of the Council, however the BDAC appealed the decision. We will continue to monitor the case and provide regular updates.
Our department briefed members on the timeline for the community ballot and that the Australian Electoral Commission will conduct the ballot on behalf of the council.
Members also discussed site selection, including the size of the land package and the amenities. The current estimate is for around 160 hectares. This needs to include a community agricultural research and development zone – a requirement that came out of last year’s Senate Inquiry.
The committee heard a presentation on a transition strategy to be implemented once a site was selected. Strategies include recognising the participation of the non-host community and assisting with their future economic development. This work also includes examining potential activities and impacts for the relevant communities.
NRWMF General Manager, Sam Chard, also gave an update on establishing a Regional Consultative Committee for the host community (to replace the current, separate consultative committees).
