The Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Senator Canavan, recently visited the communities of Kimba, Hawker and Quorn to discuss the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility.
The District Council of Kimba and Flinders Ranges Council, including Outback Communities Authority, can now move to a community ballot. The Minister met with the councils to work through how the ballots would run.
During his visit, Senator Canavan engaged with a number of stakeholders in these communities to hear their thoughts and concerns for the facility.
The Minister also met with the Kimba and Barndioota consultative committees and members of their respective economic working groups.
The Minister thanked members for their efforts and patience, and reflected on some of the great outcomes delivered through the Community Benefits Programme.
The most informative parts of the trip were the open discussions in the Hawker Sports Centre with around 60 members of the public, and the Kimba Gateway Hotel with more than 100 attendees.
