Preparations for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope gained momentum this week, with research scientists testing data pipelines processing 400 gigabytes of data per second.

For the tests researchers from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Perth, Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US and Shanghai Astronomical Observatory in China accessed the world's most powerful supercomputer, Summit. This allowed them to process simulated observations of the early universe ahead of the radio telescope being built in Western Australia and South Africa.
