The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources was not originally contacted for comment on this story, but can provide the following facts which can be attributed to a spokesperson:
“The National Radioactive Waste Management Act (2012) was introduced in 2012 by the former government, and had bipartisan support,” the spokesperson said.
“The National Radioactive Waste Management Amendment (Site Specification, Community Fund and Other Measures) Bill 2020 was not drafted to make new provisions regarding native title at Napandee.
“The Federal Court found native title was extinguished at Napandee. That said the government will work with Traditional Owners to protect any culture and heritage on the site and surrounds.
“Under the current Act, the Minister retains the power to nominate a site. Under the new proposal, Parliament will have a say on this national facility.
“The Act would deliver on commitments to the community of Kimba, which broadly supports the facility.”
