This report updates some of the statistics previously presented in Entrepreneurship dynamics in Australia: lessons from microdata. It covers additional years and uses the most recent version of the Business Longitudinal Analysis Data Environment (BLADE).
The updates reveal an upward trend in entrepreneurship after 2013. The share of small young firms from net job creation is increasing, whereas the net number of jobs created by all groups of firms is falling.
Key findings:
- The rate of firm entry in Australia declined from 2002 to 2013.
- After 2013, the rate of firm entry started increasing but still has not recovered all lost ground.
- Small young firms make an oversized contribution to net job creation, and their share has been increasing.
- Despite that, the total number of jobs created by small mature, small young and large firms has been falling.
