The National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority (NOPSA) was responsible for improving offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas safety in Commonwealth waters from 2005 to 2012.
An independent panel of experts reviewed NOPSA operations in 2011, in accord with the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006.
The review examined NOPSA’s effectiveness in improving occupational health and safety, particularly in developing safety cases and engaging operators. It was tabled in Parliament on 8 December 2011.
The Government accepted all of the review panel’s recommendations. The final response includes a comprehensive implementation plan.
The expanded authority, the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority, took responsibility for enacting many of the recommendations.
