The National Measurement Institute has released its Legal metrology compliance in 2021–22 report.
This annual report offers transparency to traders and customers on our compliance activities and the performance of different sectors.
In 2021–22, NMI trade measurement inspectors audited over 3,100 business premises (including initial and follow-up audits).
This included:
- testing around 7,100 measuring instruments
- inspecting more than 470 weighbridges
- reviewing more than 17,000 lines of packaged goods (almost 60,000 individual packages) for correct measure and measurement labelling.
We issued 35 warning letters and 18 infringement notices totalling $28,860 during this period.
To comply with movement restrictions and reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, field audits were suspended or restricted in many areas for significant periods during 2021–22. We showed flexibility in our regulatory approach during this time, letting businesses operate under difficult circumstances while still protecting consumers.
NMI’s compliance activities ensure a level playing field between buyers and sellers so that both parties get what they pay for.
