The Australian Government has awarded Major Project Status to the Star of the South Offshore Windfarm Project off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria.
Costing between $8 billion and $10 billion, the project will deliver renewable energy (up to 2.2 GW capacity) to the National Electricity Market. It aims to supply up to 20% of Victoria’s electricity.
The Star of the South project will contribute to Australia’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050 by supporting our transition to renewable energy.
The project will create an estimated 2,280 jobs during construction and 300 ongoing direct jobs once operational.
Major Project Status (MPS) means the Major Projects Facilitation Agency will provide bespoke, tailored facilitation, referral and information services to Star of the South for 3 years. This includes understanding and navigating the Australian Government regulatory approvals process.
Most projects with MPS face complex Australian Government regulatory challenges and make a significant contribution to:
- national strategic priorities
- the Australian economy and growth
- employment and education
- development for regional and northern Australia.
