Dr Cathy Foley ended her tenure as Australia’s Chief Scientist on 31 December 2024.

Throughout her service as Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Foley has overseen and managed several major projects that have shaped Australia’s scientific landscape.

As Chief Scientist, Dr Foley held the role of Executive Officer of Australia’s National Science and Technology Council, which gives science and technology advice to government.

In 2023, Dr Foley led the national conversation on the new National Science and Research Priorities and helped to elevate the recognition of First Nations knowledge systems.

She led an extensive consultation process with Australia’s science and research community, along with the Australian public, to inform her work on these priorities.

Dr Foley’s leadership in quantum has helped to build awareness of quantum technologies and their potential across the Australian economy.

She contributed to Australia’s first National Quantum Strategy and presented the Quantum Meets workshop series with a range of industries.

Her experience and leadership in quantum research also led to Dr Foley speaking at the 2022 and 2023 Quantum World Congresses in the United States.

Alongside this work, Dr Foley set up the Government Scientists Group (GSG), made up of 32 government agencies with a science capability.

The GSG offers an avenue to share information and collaborate across agencies, promoting science in government.

Dr Foley’s passion for outreach has seen her advocate for women in STEM, and inspire interest in science among young people and students across Australia.

Through her visits to schools and a range of public events, Dr Foley has left a lasting impression on Australians.

Recognising her contributions and experience, the Government has appointed Dr Foley to the Board of the CSIRO for a three-year term, starting 3 January 2025.
