As General Manager of Analytical Services, Tim oversees the provision of lab services for the food, health and environment sectors.
In Tim’s own words, ‘It’s an exciting time to be working in measurement science. There are many ambitious technological and scientific developments happening across global economies. These developments have a positive impact on improving people’s lives – from helping provide food, energy and water security to developing better medical treatments and sustaining the environment.’
‘Measurement science plays a key role in all this work, whether it is the research to understand and track the status of important environmental markers and food safety or the ever-increasing measurement precision needed for development of new technologies that provide for better outcomes and solutions.’

Career journey
Tim has always been interested in science. Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s he was excited by the future envisioned in science fiction books, TV and films, like Star Wars, Dr Who and the Thunderbirds.
‘As a teenager growing up in central Victoria new technologies like home computers and portable stereos were starting to enter our homes. I dreamt of being involved in the creation of new technology and science’.
Tim enrolled in biology and physics in high school and completed a bachelor’s degree in applied science and chemistry. He started his career at Southcorp Wines (Mildura) supporting novel wine and grape juice product development, then moved to Nestle Australia coordinating chemistry lab operations.
In 2000, he joined the National Measurement Institute’s Port Melbourne team and managed a range of food-related chemical and bioanalytical techniques. Over 24 years, Tim has built his career at NMI, working in various roles that have shaped measurement science in trade and sovereign capability.
In his current role, Tim’s vision is to deliver on NMI’s mission to support stakeholders in industry, government, and research in alignment with Australian government objectives. As a leader, he is dedicated to maintaining a growth mindset and being mindful of change management principles. ‘I've seen many changes at NMI. It's important to maintain a growth mindset and learn from experiences.’
‘I am committed to providing a great workplace and ensuring we build and prioritise capability and engagement in support of the current and emerging matters affecting Australia’s interests.’
The big issues shaping measurement science
For NMI, a major priority is helping to build sovereign capability in key industries associated with energy transition, national self-sufficiency and security.
‘The capabilities and expertise of the NMI are foundational to many national interests, for example, advanced manufacturing and support for Australia’s export food trade.
A particular focus for the Analytical Services branch is supporting producers involved in novel foods, bushfoods, and alternative protein manufacture. Tim’s considers food safety as a priority for his team. With their work in food allergens helping to ensure food security for generations to come.
Another key project his team is working on is a research collaboration focused on understanding the prevalence of emerging contaminants in Victorian waterways and bays.
‘We have developed testing to identify many hundreds of chemicals that can cause environmental harm or serve as important environmental markers for sources of contamination. By identifying the source of contamination, we can work to reduce contaminants in our waterways and make them safer.’
Tim and his team are helping to shape measurement science and investigating the big issues each day. He feels fortunate to be working with talented people on projects that improve people’s lives.
