About the report

This independent report explores adopting technologies and increasing digitisation to support the decommissioning industry.

We commissioned research from the Australian Academy of Technological Science & Engineering (ATSE) to help inform Australia’s Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap.

The research analysed technological gaps across the decommissioning value chain. Closing these gaps can help improve efficiency in domestic decommissioning. Innovative technologies can also improve industry best practice.

The research investigated the strengths and weaknesses in Australia's research capability across the decommissioning value chain.

It found that Australia can use its research strengths to:

  • understand and manage the impacts of decommissioning on the environment and ecosystems
  • improve waste management
  • give opportunities for recycling of decommissioned infrastructure.

The report outlines clear pathways for offshore oil and gas workers to transfer to adjacent industries.

ATSE proposes that leveraging our research strengths could position Australia as an important collaboration partner for the decommissioning industry now and into the future.
