We spoke with Amelia MacMillan, who successfully completed the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) Graduate Development Program in 2024.
Amelia's story
Amelia holds a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics and Biochemistry) and completed the program while living in Canberra.
This is what Amelia had to say about the program and working at DISR.
Describe your placements and the work you did
My first rotation was with the Property team. I created a Power BI dashboard to report the department's property occupancy levels to the Executive Board. I also helped to streamline and document processes through standard operating procedures.
My second rotation was with the Office of the Chief Scientist. I assisted the Communications team to organise the Government Scientists Group STEM Expo. This careers event attracted 1,500 in-person attendees and 600 online attendees.
I was on the Social Club committee and held the Communications Coordinator position before stepping into the Secretary position. I coordinated the newsletter, assisted with fundraisers and chaired meetings.
What was the best advice you received when you started with the department?
Take as many opportunities that come your way as possible. Try to say ‘yes’ to new opportunities and experiences, even if you think you won’t like them. You’ll connect with the people around you and come out better for it.
What was the highlight of your experience in the Graduate Development Program?
Making new friends in the graduate cohort. It was a great time to get to know so many talented and hardworking people.
Why did you choose to work at DISR and what is your favourite thing about the department?
I chose to work at DISR because of the portfolio breadth and content. I liked working there because the culture is unmatched. There is an incredible amount of friendliness, support and care.
If you moved to Canberra for the program, what is some advice you may have for others about to do the same?
People are very friendly and welcoming so don’t feel like you can’t join in. Also, electric throw blankets are your best friend.
