The National AI Centre has released the AI Impact Navigator. This resource helps Australian businesses better understand, manage and report the impact and outcomes of their AI systems use.

The Navigator builds on the work of the Australian Government’s Voluntary AI Safety Standard, to help adopt safe and responsible AI nationwide. The Navigator lets organisations think more broadly about the outcomes their AI has on:

  • customers
  • investors
  • the workforce
  • the broader community.

Unlike other AI frameworks and tools, the Navigator focuses on understanding and addressing the realworld social, environmental and economic impacts of AI systems. By building on appropriate guardrails from the Voluntary AI Safety Standard, it helps companies publicly report on their work and impact, and gives tools and templates to do so.

The Navigator has 4 dimensions to help companies measure AI impact:

  • social licence and corporate transparency
  • workforce and productivity
  • effective AI and community impact
  • customer experience and consumer rights.

To further support the Navigator, we have published a practical guide for environmental, social and governance (ESG) practitioners. The AI and ESG guide offers the first steps to companies on adopting safe and responsible AI.

The National AI Centre and CSIRO’s Data61 developed the AI Impact Navigator with input from members of the Responsible AI at Scale Think Tank.
