About the report

This independent report explores how regional Australia will play a key role in developing the decommissioning industry.

We commissioned the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) to research the offshore oil and gas decommissioning industry. We aimed to increase our knowledge base and inform Australia’s Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap. CSIRO produced 2 full length reports on the regional opportunities and social acceptability for domestic offshore oil and gas decommissioning.

This summary report:

  • assesses the opportunities and challenges to set up a sustainable domestic decommissioning industry in regional Australia
  • aligns with principles to achieve a circular economy and net positive impact on local communities
  • explores how important social acceptance is for decommissioning and resource recovery
  • looks at the benefits of leveraging a diverse and skilled workforce across the decommissioning value chain.

CSIRO found 5 main enablers to support industry development across the value chain:

  • consistent, adaptive and co-designed governance frameworks
  • improved and progressive planning and decision-making
  • technology and innovation
  • industry collaboration and coordination
  • social acceptability through authentic and active engagement.
