This collaborative research project with Professor Prema-chandra Athukorala from the ANU examines how Australian manufacturing fits into global production networks (GPNs).
GPN products account for nearly half of total Australian manufacturing exports. This study examines the patterns and influences in global production sharing, including:
- how Australian manufacturing fits into global production sharing
- the implications of global production sharing for the performance of and structural change in Australian manufacturing
- policy options for effectively linking Australian manufacturing to global production networks.
The results show that Australian manufacturing has a distinct competitive edge in specialised, skill-intensive tasks in several manufacturing sub-sectors.
