  • Emeritus distinguished professor of oceanography, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, one of the world’s foremost centres for global earth, ocean and atmosphere research.
  • Researched and taught in Australia and in the United States for many years, including as Established Chair of Theoretical Chemistry, University of Sydney.
  • Established MRV Systems LLC in 2010, a company that manufactures ocean robots, with a colleague at the Scripps Institution. These autonomous drones take chemical and physical measurements across the world’s oceans.
  • Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE)
  • Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI)
