Intellectual Property Policy Group

The Intellectual Property Policy Group is an interdepartmental committee.

About the group

The Intellectual Property Policy Group (IPPG) is a standing interdepartmental committee set up in response to the Productivity Commission’s report into intellectual property (IP) arrangements.

We set up the group in 2017 to support an integrated and coherent approach to developing the government’s policy agenda for IP issues.

The group crosses different departments and agencies responsible for the different aspects of IP:

  • Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts
  • Attorney General’s Department
  • Department of Education
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
  • Department of Health and Aged Care
  • Department of Home Affairs
  • Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
  • Department of the Treasury
  • Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
  • Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
  • National Indigenous Australians Agency
  • Other departments as agreed by the Chair

Decision-making

The group doesn’t have legislated decision-making responsibility. It follows 4 guiding principles:

  • effectiveness
  • efficiency
  • adaptability
  • accountability.

Policy focus

The group focuses on policy development under 4 themes:

  • artificial intelligence
  • Indigenous Knowledge
  • accessibility of enforcement
