Promoting safe and responsible AI
AI is part of our daily lives and will transform every sector of the economy and society. AI will:
- allow us to quickly do simple tasks, like writing emails or summarising documents
- drive automation in manufacturing, agriculture and the care sector, where acute skills shortages persist
- improve decision-making
- introduce new ways of tailoring services for people.
As AI becomes more pervasive it can also present risks, scaling up errors and biases in ways that cause real harm to people.
The Australian Government has listened to feedback on AI and is acting to make sure AI systems in Australia are safe and reliable. We are taking steps to:
- support and promote best practice for safety
- work with global partners on the safe development and deployment of AI
- support AI capability in Australia and drive responsible AI adoption.
Driving AI adoption
We are supporting Australia to become a global leader in developing and adopting trusted, secure and responsible AI.
AI is a critical technology with the capacity to impact Australia’s national interest. This includes our national security, economic prosperity and social cohesion.
Meet the AI Expert Group
The government has set up a temporary AI expert group with 12 appointees spanning industry, academia and legal expertise. The group will advise us on testing, transparency and accountability measures for AI in legitimate, but high-risk settings to ensure our AI systems are safe.
