Drinking water (not bottled) samples

We recommend the following preservation procedures, holding times and conditions when submitting non-bottled drinking water samples for testing. Please treat these recommendations as a guide only.

Our recommendations for submitting drinking water samples

During sampling, do not to rinse out or spill preservatives.

Avoid cross-contaminating bottles. for instance, nitric acid for metals can contaminate nitrate analysis.

Some tests must minimise exposure to air to avoid analyte losses.

If the tests need the addition of preservatives before sampling, contact us to organise the supply of appropriate containers.

Many of the preservatives are hazardous chemicals. For instance, strong acids or alkaline solutions. You should make sure you handle them with care. We recommend you wear safety glasses and gloves.

For product water, please supply it as you would deliver it to the consumer. It should be:

  • at least 15 L
  • in sealed containers
  • with all the same packing date or use by date.

If pack size is greater than 15 L, please supply one unit as a sealed package. Do not split or sub-sample bulk containers.
